November 13 - MASSive Transformation

For the past month, we have been doing a series of Faith Nights designed to introduce teens to the new translation of the Roman Missal that will begin use in all English-speaking parishes on November 27.  Our hope is that the teens will use this new translation as an opportunity to break away from the rote responses and to really thinka bout the words used during Mass.

The goal of this week's Faith Night is to challenge the teens to enter fully into the celebration of the Mass & to allow it to transform their hearts and lives.

Description:

This night begins with a Pop Quiz game that reviews the information we've learned during the past 3 nights of this series on the new translation of the Roman Missal.  After the game, the teens will hear witness talks by both teens and adults sharing transformation moments they have experienced during the Mass.  The talks demonstrate that when we fully enter in to the Mass, God meets us in the experience of the liturgy in a profound way.

A teaching on the importance of "Full, Active, Conscious" participation during the Mass encourages teens to think about how we, as the Body of Christ, are called to fully particpate in the Mass. Following the teaching, the teens engage in small group discussion about their own experiences of the Mass and are challenged to think about how they can get more out of Mass.

Finally, during our closing prayer, the teens are given the opportunity to make a commitment to full, active, conscious participation in Mass and spend some time praying for the entire parish during this time of change.

Parent Connect:

(This section is a brief outline of the teaching for the night with suggestions on how you, as a parent, might connect personally to the night's topic.)

It is easy to look at the changes that are coming to the Mass and get frustrated or turned off.  However, taking just a few minutes to learn more about what we say during Mass and why we say it can help all of us reap massive benefits in our own experiences at Mass.  Below is a short video designed specifically for parents to help introduce these changes:

Discussion Questions:

(This section provides some questions for you to continue the night's discussion at home)

  • What is one thing you have learned during our 4 week session on the Mass?
  • What is the most memorable Mass you have ever experienced?  What made it different?
  • Why is going to Mass a big deal for Catholics?
  • What is your typical attitude concerning Mass?
  • What do you want to get out of going to Mass?  What can you change to make that happen?

Weekly Challenge:

Take some time to read the readings for this upcoming Sunday before going to Mass.  After Mass, talk with your family about what connections or life applications you got out of the Mass.
