November 27 - Service to Homebound & Elderly

Every month on the 4th Sunday of the month, our teenagers gather to do service and reach out to the needy in our community.  This month, our mission was to reach out to the homebound and those in nursing homes.

Description:

The holidays can be depressing for residents of nursing homes and the homebound. Memories of past celebrations with friends and family seem a million years distant. Loss of a spouse, children, or other loved ones close in on nursing home residents.  More than 50 percent of nursing home residents never have visitors. Especially, during the holidays, this can lead to many of our community's elderly feeling lonely and isolated.

In order to reach out to these important members of our community this holiday season, the teens at CYO created Christmas ornaments and cards to be delivered to the nursing homes and homebound by our parish Care Teams and visiting eucharistic ministers.

(Instructions for the ornaments we made can be found at Disney Family Fun.)

The teens also rotated through stations that trained them on the various liturgical ministries during the Mass.  All teens were encouraged to sign up for one ministry between now and Christmas at the 5:00pm CYO Mass.

Taking It Further:

Consider taking some time to reach out to the elderly in nursing homes or homebound this Christmas as a family.  It only takes one minute to reach out...
